在丈夫早逝后，奥罗拉操持起家里的一切，对艾玛更加“专制”。艾玛虽然表明很温柔、软弱，但是内心却十分倔强。两母女也因此多次吵架。奥罗拉一直没再接受其他男人的追求，艾玛也在和母亲相依相偎、磕磕绊绊中长大。
长大后的艾玛开始极力摆脱母亲的“专制”：她不顾母亲的反对，嫁给了一个工作不稳定的研究生……她花了三十年去摆脱母亲的“专制”，到头来却发现自己对母亲的始终不忘的依依亲情。。
